Why would my A/C break?

And given that newer systems today can be up to 60% more effective than older air conditioners, it's certainly a viable and cost effective measure. And again, if your unit is not properly maintained, it can cut down its lifespan considerably. So yes, it's a perfectly acceptable question to ask. Especially as a newer unit could even mean lower energy bills, due to providing a higher output with the same amount of power.

What other preventative measures can I take?

Seeing as an electric model can last anywhere from twelve to fifteen years and a gas unit could last anywhere from twenty to twenty five years, there are many things you can do to get the most bang for your buck. As a general rule of thumb, you'll want your unit to have an annual checkup. This goes a long way in ensuring you get as many years out of your air conditioner as possible.
